The company begins delivering equipment for the terminal this April, Mr.Melnikov said, adding the grain cargo will be transported to the port by rail and trucks.
The grain terminal project turned to be a new strategy of the port Authority in a bid to boost cargo volumes via its terminals. As of now, the grain is shipped largely on inland waterways not accessible throughout the year. There are still no grain transshipment facilities in the Russian Caspian Sea, Mr. Melnikov said.
Since February 2006, Sea Commercial Port Olya has been the major stevedoring company operating year-round three 5-m-deep berths at the port.
The port assets include road and railway linked with the federal road network. Port Olya having a border and customs control point is open to foreign-flagged ships delivering imports. In 2009 the Port Authority reported some 750.000 tons shipped via its terminals and almost 1.000 ship calls.
