Klaipeda port throughput up 12.2% in January-February, at 4.8 million tons

Freight volumes passed through Port of Klaipeda (Lithuania) in January-February 2010 increased by 12.2% as compared with that of 2009, up to 4.815.435,9 tons, the Port Authority statement said.
 
For these two months the port transshipped 1.866.789 tons of bulk cargoes, a 40.7% surge, 1.393.254.8 tons of general cargoes, or 23.7% up from January-February 2009. Volumes of liquid bulk cargo fell by 15.4%, to 1.555.392.1 tons. Container turnover also declined by 2.7%, to 40.132 TEUs. Cargo volumes via Butinge Terminal dropped in January-February 2010, by 13.3% from the previous year’s figures, to 1.302.859.4 tons. In the reporting period the port has seen a 25-percent increase in ro-ro cargoes, at 28.945 tons.

Klaipeda port is the northernmost ice-free port on the East coast of the Baltic Sea, the largest transport hub for sea and road routes in the Republic of Lithuania. There are currently 17 stevedoring, ship repair and shipbuilding companies operating in the port, providing ranged services. Cargo turnover at the port of Klaipeda (Lithuania) in January-December 2009 decreased to almost 27.866 million tons or a year-over-year 6.3% drop.
