Senator Lines concludes 'painful' downsizing talks

Senator Lines has concluded its internal negotiations, paving the way for the line to begin implementing various plans outlined in the company's realignment scheme called "Concept 2007". "This new positioning involves drastic, painful measures," said Senator Lines CEO Hans-Hermann Mohr, "but, with this rapid, clear correction, we are certain to create conditions to return to the success of the past years." In September the company's board presented the main points of its repositioning to staff and the public, announcing that planned to drop loss-making services offer an optimised timetable of profitable 12 liner services.
Bremen-based Senator says the plan was developed in response to the paradoxical trend in the market characterised by a downward pressure on rates despite rising demand - especially in Far East.
Senator will cut carrying capacity up to 240,000 TEU a year. Its main reduction - 135,000 TEU a year - will come from the pendulum service PDS, operated in collaboration with CKYHS Alliance which will end by the first of the year. From January, Senator Lines' 12 scheduled services will involve 1,440 voyages a year, down from 2,064 in 2006. As part of "Concept 2007", Senator has also acknowledged there will be job losses and new appointments.
Along with a concentration on profitable scheduled services, the core of the plan involves centralisation of commercial and operating activities in lines management, at the Head Office in Bremen, with a team of 115 staff.
