Ship transits via Danube-Black Sea canal up 68%, to 126 vessels in Feb.

In February 2010, 126 vessels passed through the Ukrainian Danube-Black Sea deep canal, 51 units more over last year’ period, or a 68% gain. The transit ships carried some 178.000 tons of inbound and outbound commodities. In January this year there were just 103 ships, 23 less than in February, the Ministry of Transport and Communications of Ukraine statement said.

The Sulina Canal (Romania) reported for February 75 transits, 40.5% down from the Ukrainian’s transit numbers.
 
Since the beginning of navigation 3.685 vessels have passed via the canal. In February the Danube-Black Sea Ukrainian canal saw the flags of different countries: Russia, Sierra Leone, Turkey, Moldova, Panama, Malta, Bulgaria and others. There were 29 Ukrainian-flagged ships (23% of the total), and 97 foreign vessels - 77% of the total, the Ukrainian Ministry of Transport and Communications said.
