Cargo volumes via China ports up 29%, to 1.196 b tons in January-February

In January-February freight traffic volumes through the ports in China grew by 29% as compared with the same period in 2009, to 1.196 billion tons, the Ministry of Transport of the People's Republic of China (PRC) reports.
The total volumes include a 28.6-percent rise at seaports, at 833.34 million tons, and at river ports, a 29.9% gain, to 362.8 million tons.

Container volumes via China ports terminals grew by 28.4%, up to 20 million 964 thousand TEUs, including seaports, by 26.5%, with 18.867.000 TEUs, and river ports, up to 2.973.000 TEUs, a 49.4% surge over Jan-Feb., 2009.

The Ministry statistics show Shanghai port’s throughput increased by 39%, to 89.2 million tons, Tianjin by 10.1%, to 58.5 million tons, Qinhuangdao, by 27.4%, to 41.3 million tons, Qingdao, by 8.2%, to 56.26 million tons.

In 2009 the total freight turnover at the ports of China reached 7 billion tons.
