Ukraine, Kazakhstan, Russia to implement GLONASS project

Ukraine, together with Kazakhstan and Russia will participate in the project of Global Navigation Satellite System, GLONASS, the press service of President of Ukraine Viktor Yanukovych reported. President of Ukraine Viktor Yanukovych and President of Kazakhstan Nursultan Nazarbayev have discussed in a telephone conversation today the possibility of "Dnepr" rocket launch carrying European "Prism" and "Picard" satellites. President of Kazakhstan has supported the initiative of Ukraine.

The two leaders were focused in their conversation on space and energy bilateral cooperation.

Global Navigation Satellite System (GLONASS), Soviet and Russia's navigation satellite system, developed for the former Soviet Union Ministry of Defense. GLONASS is managed for the Russian Federation Government by the Russian Space Forces. The system is operated by the Coordination Scientific Information Center (KNITs) of the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation. The operational space segment of GLONASS consists of 21 satellites in 3 orbital planes, with 3 on-orbit spares.The system is a counterpart to the United States Global Positioning System (GPS).
