According to preliminary data of Petrostat the industrial production index (IPI) in St. Petersburg in increased by 13.1% compared to last year figures for January-February 2010 (total growth in Russia – 5.8%) and made up 93.7 %. According to the Committee for Economic Development, Industrial Policy and Trade of the city administration, it exceeds considerably total IPI for 2009 (79.9%). In January 2010 IPI totaled 89.8% in St. Petersburg. Thus, the growth of this indicator detected for the first time in August last year, continues.
Let us remind that in the first half of 2009 due to the global financial and economic crisis that caused the reduction in demand for the products of St. Petersburg’s enterprises, a significant drop of IPI in all areas of activity of manufacturing industries in St. Petersburg was registered.
According to Evgeniy Elin, the Chairman of the Committee for Economic Development, Industrial Policy and Trade, in the winter period of this year IPI got pas the point of 100% in a number of economic activities. The largest increase is registered: in the production of rubber and plastic products (in 1.5 times), metallurgical industry and manufacture of fabricated metal products (IPP – 128.5%), production of vehicles and equipment (128.4%), production of leather and leather goods and footwear production (122.6%), chemical production (121.9%), manufacture of other nonmetallic mineral products (121.3%), wood processing and wood products (119.6%). Finally, IPI in the production and distribution of electricity, gas and water STI totaled 107.5%.
In overcoming the consequences of the crisis industrial production index is not able to grow in all directions. Thus, in January-February 2010 IPI fell below the average level in the production of machinery and equipment, textile and clothing industries, and some others in St. Petersburg.
