Baltic Coal Terminal to handle the largest coal consignment in the history of the ports of the Baltic countries

Baltic Coal Terminal (BCT), the largest coal terminal in Ventspils port has carried out shipment of the biggest coal consignment in the history of the Baltic ports. As the Baltic Association of Transport and Logistics reports, consignment with a total volume of 87 tons was shipped in record time - in two days. Loading rate made up 43 thousand tons of coal per day, the chairman of the Board of Baltic Coal Terminal JSC Ilya Sokolov told.

Vessel Eptalofos, Piraeus, Greece (95 thousand tons deadweight), taking on board coal consignment of Shachta Zarechnay JSC, became the largest dry cargo vessel loaded with coal, in the history of the Baltic ports. Currently, Greek dry cargo ship carrying Russian coal on is heading in the direction of Italy.

"We could say that one year after commencement of operation of the terminal, BCT has made the fresh gains not only in speed and volume of coal shipments, but also in the maintenance of ships of the class capesize", - said Ilya Sokolov.

Construction of Baltic Coal Terminal JSC has appeared to be one of the largest investment projects implemented at the territory of Ventspils Free Port recently. The total investment in the construction of only the first stage of the terminal and the purchase of technological equipment is estimated at over 77 million euros. Such a large-scale investment in the specific coal terminal is explained by the fact that for the first time in the Baltic countries, in the port of Ventspils a coal terminal of enclosed type with the most modern technologies of coal transshipment has been put into operation. For the construction of BCT used the most modern technical solutions have been applied. By the end of 2009 (since the beginning of operation in March 2009) Baltic Coal Terminal has exported 2.7 million tons of coal.
