Freight volumes via BAM to reach 100m tons a year by 2050

The volume of freight traffic on the Baikal-Amur Railroad (BAM) in 2050 could grow to 100 million tons a year, the RZD (Russian Railways) press service said, quoting Vladimir Yakunin, president of RZD OJSC. Mr. Yakunin was speaking at a meeting on the development of the Baikal-Amur Railroad. "The development of the BAM zone is one of the RZD’s priorities,” Mr. Yakunin said.

To ensure the passage of the projected traffic flows will require construction of additional rail infrastructure. Vladimir Yakunin said the BAM infrastructure development project would need 400 billion rubles in 2008 prices. The RZD meeting will prepare recommendations for the development of the Baikal-Amur Railroad for the Russia’s Govt.

Baikal-Amur Railroad is one of the largest railway lines in the world. It runs through the territory of several Russian regions, Irkutsk, Chita and Amur regions, Buryatia, Yakutia, Khabarovsk Territory. Along with the Trans-Siberian rail line BAM is a second route to the Pacific Ocean.

Being the shortest rail route to the Pacific ports, to South Yakutia and other regions of Russia, BAM reduces the distance for the carriage of passengers and cargoes to the Primorye region, Vladivostok and Nakhodka in more than 200 km, Vanino - nearly 500 km, Yakutia - 600 km and for passengers and cargoes hauled to Sakhalin, Kamchatka and Magadan, Russia – up to 1000 km.

Currently, traffic volume is about 12 million tons a year in the direction to Taishet - Tynda - Komsomolsk. Russia’s railway transport development strategy to 2030 implies a 2-3 times increase in traffic volumes via BAM due to the growth of industrial production, construction of the railway line to Yakutsk, the development of a number of deposits and development of Vanino-Sovgavanskogo hub. Komsomolsk-on-Amur - Sovetskaya Gavan line is the weakest link of Baikal-Amur Railroad.

RZD OJSC has designed the reconstruction project of Oune – Highland line, construction of new Kuznetsovsky tunnel. The project is expected to be funded by the Investment Fund of the Russian Federation. Total project cost (in 2007 prices excluding VAT) is 37.7 billion rubles, the estimated share of Russian Govt, 11.7 billion rubles.

The project implementation will increase by 2020 traffic flows on the eastern parts of BAM up to 50 million tons a year. The transportation of passengers may reach 16.3 million people by 2020 (a 19-percent rise as compared to 2008).

In the future, in accordance with the Strategy-2030, it is planned that BAM will be specializing in heavy train traffic, and container and passenger trains will be launched on Trans-Siberian Railroad.
