TransContainer to carry 205.000 tons of pipes for Nord Stream by April 2011

TransContainer and Vyksunsky Metallurgical Plant Today (Nizhni Novgorod) of the United Metallurgical Company, UMC CJSC has signed today the contract for transport-forwarding services to carry steel pipes of large diameter of non-metallic coating, produced for Nord Stream underwater gas pipeline.

The cargo will be transported en route Navashino, Gorky Railway - Kotka (Finland) on specialized (model 13-9744) platforms of TransContainer. There will be 205.000 tons of the cargo carried from May 2010 through April 2011.

In 2008-2009 the pipes for the Nord Stream project were transported in gondolas, which turned out to be difficult while slinging pipes during their unloading. Besides, it took quite a long time for unloading operation. In 2009, there was a trial shipment of 620 tons of pipes on ten platforms by TransContainer. The platforms were specially equipped not to damage the coating of pipes during transportation. The consignee, EUPEC, a French firm, laying gas pipeline of Nord Stream. The firm's representatives confirmed the suitability of platforms for this cargo as well as the perfect condition of delivered pipes.

"For UMC this is the first contract with TransContainer, and we hope that this will turn out to be successful and will begin a long and mutually beneficial cooperation,” UMC’s President Vladimir Markin was quoted as saying.

TransContainer, a subsidiary of RZD, Russian Railways, was registered on March 4, 2006 on the basis of a RZD’s branch - Center for Containerized Cargo Shipment, TransContainer. TransContainer Company is a leading rail container operator in Russia, providing a broad range of services for container shipments and logistics services. As of now the company operates the largest in Russia, CIS and Baltic cars fleet: over 24.000 flatcars, some 60.000 containers of various sizes, as well as more than 840 units of trucks, tractor-trailers.

Nord Stream gas pipeline through the Baltic Sea will link Russia and the EU to transport natural gas to supply businesses and households. The new pipeline will be an important factor for energy security of Europe.
