Lithuania to begin LNG terminal construction this year

Building of the terminal for transshipment of liquefied natural gas (LNG) in Klaipeda (Lithuania), most likely, based on Klaipedos nafta is scheduled to begin in 2010, Delfi reports quoting Minister of Energy Arvydas Sekmokas’ statement. The Govt. expects the results of two studies related to the construction of terminals. According to the minister, a partner in the terminal project can become a supplier of LNG.

The terminal is expected to draw private investors. Otherwise the country’s govt. is ready to fund the project, as the terminal will guarantee Lithuania's energy security. Currently Russia is the only gas exporter to the country, Mr. Sekmokas said, adding Lithuania pays for imported gas a lot more than any other European country.

Arvydas Sekmokas said that the small terminal worth €620-670 million can be built within 2-3 years.
