A ship carrying illegal immigrants sank off Egypt cost. As a result, at least five people are reported dead, several more missing, Russian Vesti TV channel reports.
According to Egypt emergency agency the boat with several dozen passengers on board was heading for Italy. The incident occurred some 3 kilometers off Egypt coast in the province of Kafr el-Sheikh (140 km north-west of Cairo). Emergency team rescued and detained about 25 people. Currently, the search operation continues.
Overall, according to the Egypt authorities, there were 40-50 immigrants heading for Europe through the Mediterranean Sea. The boat was spotted by the Egypt Coast Guard near Tamira. Some of the people, trying to escape, jumped into the water and drowned, some died when the boat capsized.
