Port of Melbourne posts a 24.6% rise in freight traffic this February

Total freight volumes passed via the Port of Melbourne increased by 24.6% from the same month a year earlier, Port of Melbourne Corporation (PoMC) financial report said.

Containers volumes growth contributed to the overall rise, the Port Authority said, adding the numbers almost reached the port’s pre-crises volumes. In February 2010 total containers turnover gained 23.6%, to 188.000 TEUs. In 12 months the Port of Melbourne transshipped more than 2.14 million TEUs by the end of this February.

In Feb. 2010, there was a 9.3-percent increase in outbound containerized cargoes as compared with Feb. 2009 and a 6.1% rise in overall export volumes for financial year by the end of February. The port heavily added in timber (+137%), wheat (+82), vegetables (+82%) and paper (+54%).

In 12 months by the end of February 2010 the Port gained 0.4% in imported volumes. Inbound containerized cargoes largely contributed to the results, showing a 28.7% surge. The Port Authority posted a 194% spike in volumes of imported insulation material, aluminum (+ 177%), furniture (+ 90%), vehicle parts (+ 52%), clothing (+ 47%) and paper (+ 47%), while imports of pulp and wastepaper and fresh and frozen vegetables were down.

Port of Melbourne is the largest seaport in Australia. Along with Sydney Melbourne is a major cruise port of the country.
