Indonesian state port operator to build $33.3b on the construction of a new port

State port operator PT Pelabuhan Indonesia (Pelindo) II announced that it expected to spend US$33.3 billion on the construction of a new port in Karawang, West Java, reported Jakarta Post.

“We have selected Karawang because the port would be quite close to the industrial zone in that area.

"It would be feasible to build a new shipping terminal there because companies will find it easier to distribute their goods," Pelindo president director R.J. Lino said.

Lino said the port would include piers 20m in length and 18m depth, larger than those at Tanjung Priok, Indonesia's busiest port.

Pelindo expects the new port to be fully operational by 2025.
"In that time, if Tanjung Priok is unable to handle more passenger ships of cargo containers, we can not expand it any more, so Karawang will be used as an alternative," Lino said.
Pelindo is in a process of finding the right site for the port in Karawang, and targets to acquire 10,000 hectares of land, he said.

Lino was optimistic that the land acquisition process would run smoothly, with an anticipated amendment to the law on land acquisition.

Pelindo II, the largest port operator in the country, manages 12 seaports, including Tanjung Priok and Sunda Kelapa in Jakarta, Bojonegara in Banten, and Teluk Bayur in West Sumatra.

The company is currently working on improvements to Tanjung Priok to increase the capacity of its cargo container terminal from 4 million TEUs to 10 million TEUs by 2013.
