Matson Navigation Co. said that it will lower its fuel surcharge for service to Hawaii, Guam and Micronesia effective Sept. 12. Hawaii’s largest ocean shipper said it will decrease the surcharge because of a decline in recent bunker fuel prices. Matson will lower the fuel surcharge by 3.75 percentage points, from 25.5 percent to 21.75 percent, for its Hawaii service, and from 27 percent to 23.25 percent for its Guam/CNMI and Micronesia service.
The last adjustment to Matson’s fuel surcharge was a 2 percentage point decrease in July.
Dave Hoppes, Matson’s senior vice president for ocean services, said in a statement the latest surcharge decrease will mean a reduction in shipping costs of $100 to $150 per container.
Matson, based in Oakland, Calif., is owned by Honolulu-based Alexander & Baldwin Inc.
