The volume of imports was up 4.3% in Jan-Aug, exports rose by 19.4%. The volume of short sea trade increased by 28.1%. A record 172-percent growth in transshipment of kaolin and liquid chemicals (+95.3%) contributed to a 4.3-percent gain in eight-month volume of imported goods. Exports grew 19.4% thanks to a 255.3-percent surge in shipment of timber cargo, as well as to increased volume of paper and cellulose (+9.8% and +114.2 %, respectively).
In Jan-Aug, container traffic rose 8.3% from the same period a year earlier, to 20,272 TEUs, and 10,453 of SECU (Stora Enso Cargo Unit) container units.
Port of Oulu is situated on the North-West of Finland, near the Gulf of Bothnia of the Baltic Sea. Port Oulu’s berths are located at the ports of Oritkari, Nuottasaari, Vihreyasaari and Toppila. Port of Oulu transships over 3 million tons of cargo annually. Paper is the most important exported cargo, as well as lumber. The port also handles imports, largely crude oil and raw materials for the domestic timber industry.
