Container throughput in Singapore and Hong Kong rise in October

Singapore has maintained its lead as the world's largest container port based on box throughout figures in the first ten months of the year, handling 20.5 million TEU between January and October.Hong Kong, which is still the second busiest port in the world, lifted 2.13 million TEU in October, a year-on-year rise of 4.2 per cent. The Special Administrative Region's (SAR) cumulative box volume was 19.7 million TEU since the beginning of the year - representing a 4.9 per cent rise over the same ten-month period last year.
The statistics show that most of Hong Kong's boxes were handled at the terminals in Kwai Tsing, accounting for 13.2 million TEU, while 620,000 TEU were lifted at the SAR's other terminals. In October, the terminals at Kwai Tsing saw their total box volume surge 16.4 per cent year on year by handling 1.5 million TEU. The SAR's other terminals lifted 620,000 TEU during the month, a drop of 17 per cent compared to October 2005. In October, the Lion City handled 2.18 million TEU, 9.3 per cent more than in the same month last year.
