The 36 hectare plot of land is the last remaining site with direct deep-water access (up to approximately 20 metres) within the existing port and industrial complex.
The port is expecting major global tank terminal operators, traders and oil companies to take part in the open assessment procedure.
The port says there is increasing interest in the handling, storage, and trade of oil products. It points to the growing worldwide imbalance between regions of production and demand, as well as cargo owners wanting increased control over supply chains.
Overall, cargo sizes in the transport of oil products are growing significantly, with very large crude carriers (VLCC's) used for fuel oil already a common occurrence in Rotterdam.
