Singapore port operator PSA's 2010 throughput up 14.4 %
Container throughput handled by Singapore-based port operator PSA International increased 14.4 percent to 65.12 million 20-foot equivalent units at its port projects around the world in 2010.
PSA said it accomplished the marked increase over 2009 on the back of a 1.1 percent increase from the flagship PSA Singapore Terminals with 27.68 million TEUs and the 17.8 percent increase at PSA terminals outside Singapore with 37.44 million TEUs.
Eddie Teh, group CEO of PSA International, said the volume handled in 2010 across the group’s terminals worldwide was higher than anticipated because of a much stronger recovery in the first seven months of the year.
But he said lower growth rate in the last five months up to December 2010 indicates that weaknesses in the major global economies still persist and growth in 2011 is “expected to be uneven and cannot be taken for granted.”
In addition to its terminals in Singapore and Antwerp, PSA participates in 28 port projects in 16 countries across Asia, Europe and the Americas, with a global capacity of 111 million TEUs.
