Handling of Russian foreign trade cargo grew by 2.5% in Jan.-Sept. 06

Russia’s foreign trade input and out put grew by 2.5% to 367 million tons, including over 166 million tons of dry cargo, 200 million tons of liquid bulk cargo, quarterly survey of the Association of Commercial Seaports reads. Transshipment of dry cargo grew by 6 million tons or by 3.85%, liquid bulk cargo – by 2.88 million tons, or by 1.5%. Export of coal grew by 14% (59 million tons); metal – by 6% (26 million tons) while transportation of mineral fertilizers fell by 12.6% to 14.6 million tons (absolute value – over 2 million tons). General structure of foreign trade transportation has remained unchanged: 55% of cargo turnover falls on liquid bulk cargo, 16% - coal, 7% - metal, about 4% - mineral, container and timber cargo each.

Russian ports handled 293.3 million tons of foreign trade cargo (+3.4%, or +9.5 million tons against year-on-year result). The growth was demonstrated in all types of export-import transportation except mineral fertilizers, which decreased by 21.5% to 8.5 million tons. Russian ports handled 120 million tons of dry foreign trade cargo (+0.5%) and 173 million tons of liquid bulk cargo (+5.44%). Growth in volume of liquid bulk cargo was ensured by Russian ports.

Transshipment via foreign ports was similar to the level of the previous year – 73.6 million tons. Transshipment of oil and oil products decreased by 17.9%) while transshipment of dry cargo grew by 13.8%, (mostly coal).

Transshipment via ports of Baltic states decreased by 3.3 million tons having amounted to 47.5 million tons (-6.5%). Transshipment of liquid bulk cargo fell by over 5 million tons (- 18.3%). Transshipment of dry cargo grew by 7%, or by 1.73 million tons. Decrease in transshipment of metal, mineral fertilizers and timber by over 2.19 million tons was compensated by growth in transshipment of Russian coal (+15% to 16.8 million tons).

Ukrainian ports increased handling of Russian foreign trade cargo by 12%, or by 2.8 million tons through growth in all types of dry cargo including growth of coal transshipment by 2 million tons. In total, Ukrainian ports handled over 26 million tons of Russian foreign trade cargo including 20.95 million tons of dry cargo (+22%). Transshipment of liquid bulk cargo fell by over 16% to 5.2 million tons.

The share of Russian ports in handling of foreign trade cargo was 80% in January-September, ports of Baltic states – 13%, Ukraine – 7%.
