Daewoo Shipbuilding wins $1 bln from Norway's Aker Drilling

South Korea's Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering said Wednesday it has won a 1.2 trillion won ($1.06 billion) order to build two drill ships for Norway's Aker Drilling, AFP reports.

Daewoo said in a statement it will deliver the two vessels by late 2013 and has an option to build two more.

The vessels, each 238 metres long and 42 meters wide, are capable of drilling as deep as 12,000 metres (40,000 feet) below sea level, the country's second-largest shipbuilder said.

"High oil prices prompted many projects around the world to develop oil resources in the Arctic region and the deep sea, fanning demand for drill ships for deep-sea drilling," the company said.

Daewoo last week won a $1.8 billion order with Denmark's A.P. Moller-Maersk, the world's largest container carrier, to build 10 giant container ships over the next three years.
