Maersk Line cuts sulfur emissions in New Zealand

In pursue of zero SOx emissions from its fleet Maersk Line implemented its fuel-switch program in New Zealand, the shipping company’s press release said.

Using LSFO in New Zealand reduces SOx emission by 80-95% in port. The reduction is in this case is nine-fold.

“Most New Zealand ports are in or very near major urban areas. The SOx reduction will positively impact the public health and local environment,” says Julian Bevis, Managing Director for Maersk Line, New Zealand.

Maersk Line pioneered voluntary fuel-switching in California in 2006, and has steadily extended the program to other regions, including ports in Texas, Hong Kong and the US Pacific Northwest.

The shipping line plans to implement by 2015 low-sulfur fuel programs at 10 global locations.

A.P. Moller-Maersk Group’s shipping division Maersk Line is a global leading liner shipping company. The Maersk Line fleet comprises more than 500 vessels and a number of containers corresponding to over 1,900,000 TEUs.
