On Friday, March 11, 2011 at 05:46 (UTC) a 8.9-magnitude quake was located near the east coast of Honshu, just 130 km (80 miles) east of Sendai Japan, USGS reports. The second earthquake with a magnitude of 7.1, occurred 505km NE of Tokyo.
The earthquakes triggered a 12m tsunami along the country’s coastline. Honsu's Iwate prefecture was hit by a 4.2-meter tsunami, RIA Novosti reports citing Japan’s TV channels. The country’s region hit by the quake is expecting a significant number of casualties.
Tremor from the first quake can still be felt in Tokyo, a RIA Novosti correspondent reported. A tsunami warning has also been issued for another Honshu prefecture, Fukushima.
