Brussels reported to reject Polish shipyard restructuring plan

Polish finance Minister Aleksander Grad says he will fight to the bitter end to save ailing Polish shipyards, even though Brussels is believed to have informally rejected Polish restructuring plan for the shipyards.
The decision is thought to have been taken by Jose Manuel Barroso, the Chairman of the European Commission, TVN24 reports. The decision to be final needs to be approved by the council of European Commissioners. If the negative decision is confirmed, both shipyards will most likely go bankrupt.
The news follows talks in Brussels on Tuesday between the Polish finance minister and high EC officials.
Insiders say there is still a possibility to appeal against the Commission’s decision to the European Council– the highest political body of the European Union with no formal executive or legislative powers but dealing with major issues defining the general political guidelines of the European Union. However, the results are probably a foregone conclusion - TVN24 reports.
‘I am sorry that the time to debate is over’ Asger Petersen, an EC adviser, told TVN24.
‘I couldn’t see any signs of goodwill expressed by the Commissioner’ said Polish Minister of Treasury after the talks with Nellie Kroes.
‘This decision will have a negative impact on the entire Polish economy. We were unable to convince the EU to our, seemingly logical, arguments’ left wing leader Wojciech Olejniczak told TVN24.
A high-ranking politician of the ruling Civic Platform party told the station 'I find this decision surprising. I heard very positive opinions not so long ago’. ‘I think that the Prime Minister will undertake all possible actions to avert the negative course of events. Let’s not put down the weapons. It’s still too early for that’ he added.
