Bayernhafen Gruppe throughput up 13.4% to 29 million tonnes in 2010

Throughput in the Bayernhafen Gruppe, the six Bavarian ports of Aschaffenburg, Bamberg, Regensburg, Nuremberg, Passau and Roth, increased by 13.4%  to 29 million tonnes in 2010, Portofrotterdam reports. Rail transport showed the most marked growth, up 32.5% to 7.1 million tonnes. Trucks transported 18 million tonnes, compared to 16.2 in 2009. Transfers to and from inland shipping decreased by 4.5% to 3.8 million tonnes. One of the reasons for this was that the crisis was still affecting the transshipment of iron and steel. Also, the ports on the Danube handled less cargo due to the slow recovery of the economy in Eastern Europe. Those on the Main and the Main-Danube canal did make progress, however. For 2011, more general growth in inland shipping is expected.

In 2010, more project cargo was again handled in the group’s ports. The wind energy sector, for example, is a good customer in the ports of Regensburg and Passau, from where turbines go to Romania and Bulgaria. In Nuremberg and Regensburg, the recycling branch increased its capacity. In the latter port, approximately € 20 million will be invested in silo capacity for agribulk in 2011.

The group of ports is strong when it comes to the intermodal transport of containers, trailers and swap bodies. The growth in rail and road transport in tonnes is reflected in the 82% increase to 357,000 TEUs. 7900 TEUs of this went by ship (-14%) and 349,300 TEUs by rail. In addition, over 24,000 accompanied trailers were driven onto and off the ‘Rollende Landstrasse’ (transalpine trains on which the drivers also travel).
