Exxon restores Japan refineries, terminal operations

Exxon Mobil  said on Wednesday all its Japanese refineries have been restored to full operations and it has opened the Shiogama terminal after the earthquake and tsunami severely damaged the terminal, Reuters reports.
Exxon said its units were running over and above their normal rates to meet the strong demand for fuel.
All or parts of the refinery units were shut down after the earthquake at Exxon Mobil Japan Group's 296,000 barrels-per-day Kawasaki refinery, run by its affiliate TonenGeneral, and the 172,000 bpd Chiba refinery Exxon runs in a joint venture with Mitsui.
"We have been able to promptly restore full operations at these refineries. The Chiba was last to come to full production," Exxon spokesman Kevin Allexon said.
Allexon said the company's other two refineries --the 160,000 bpd Wakayama refinery and the 139,000 bpd Sakai refinery operated by TonenGeneral-- were not affected by the disaster in Japan.
On Tuesday, the company received 1 million liters (26,410 gallons) of gasoline and 1 million liters of kerosene at the Shiogama terminal in Miyagi Prefecture, shipped from its Kawasaki refinery.
"The damage on the terminal was very light. The biggest issue there was getting power restored and once we had that we reopened it on Sunday March 20," Allexon said.
The first barge to arrive at the terminal was owned by another company, Allexon said.
Idemitsu Kosan Co, a major oil producer in Japan, had said it began unloading oil products totaling 2,010 kiloliters at the Shiogama oil terminal on Monday.
