Abu Dhabi Terminals signs LoI to operate Khalifa Port

Abu Dhabi Ports Company, or ADPC, has signed a letter of Intent (LoI) with Abu Dhabi Terminals (ADT), a public sector port management firm, to handle the operations of the under construction Khalifa Port, when its first phase will open for business in the last quarter of the next year, Khaleej Times Online reports.

“This news signals the latest stage of our plans for Khalifa Port, which is well on target for completion late next year,” Tony Douglas, Chief Executive Officer of the port and industrial zone developer ADPC said on the sidelines of the World Ports and Trade Summit.

The announcement is “well in advance of the opening will help in the development of strategy and business planning for the benefit of future customers,” he said. About the progress on the port and industrial zone project, Douglas said the “construction is 68 per cent complete.”

On December 30, DP World and ADT announced that Abu Dhabi did not renew a five-year management contract for the Port Zayed operations. The port management was handed over to Abu Dhabi Terminals from January 1, 2011.

The ADT is owned by Abu Dhabi Ports Company and Mubadala Development Company under the purview of Abu Dhabi’s Department of Transport. ADT is also managing the three ports in Abu Dhabi.

“Discussions around the operations for the new Khalifa Port have not resulted in any binding agreement,” the joint statement said.
