Wallenius Wilhelmsen Logistics cuts carbon emissions by 21 percent

Wallenius Wilhelmsen Logistics (WWL), the global shipping and logistics company, managed to cut its CO2 emissions by 21 percent last year, compared to 2009. The company attributed the change to increased fleet optimisation and utilization.

The company also reported results of its low-sulphur fuel policy, which has allowed the company to cut its sulphur dioxide emissions (SO2) emissions by 151,000 tonnes from 2000 to 2010.

“Our commitment to sustainability, in good times and bad, has delivered steady and strong results,” declared Arild Iversen, CEO of Wallenius Wilhelmsen Logistics.

“This is the best way to prepare our customers for a world of increasing environmental costs and regulations.”

The figures cited above are contained in the company's 2010 Environmental Sustainability Report, which last year became the shipping industry’s first emissions inventory report to receive 3rd party verification that it conforms to the accounting requirements of ISO 14064-1 and the GHG protocol.

“A future that demands sustainability is on our immediate horizon,” commented Melanie Moore, vice-president of environment, Wallenius Wilhelmsen Logistics.

“New international regulations beginning in 2012 will significantly increase shipping costs as vessels will be required to burn cleaner, more expensive fuels. Improved environmental performance is the best way to prepare our fleet and our customers for these changes.”

Peter Boyd, COO of Carbon War Room, a not-for-profit organization targeting market-driven solutions to climate change, responded enthusiastically to the report.

“WWL continues to be at the forefront of industry efforts to address the environmental impacts of shipping. Measuring, verifying and reporting emissions across the WWL fleet is another notable first,” said Boyd.

“A continuous emissions reduction from such a progressive company demonstrates that economic and environmental improvement can go hand in hand.”
