"This is more bad news for a section of the shipping industry where freight rates in some trades have slid to record lows," said London's Lloyd's List.
Tanker and bulker operating costs grew 11.1 per cent and 7.4 per cent respectively, again driven by crew wage increases, which rose 10 per cent over all trades.
Moore Stephens shipping accountant partner Richard Greiner said: "Containerships saw crew wages rise an average of 20 per cent this year, and the average crew wage rise over all ships was over 10 per cent.
"We also saw stores going up by an average of 16 per cent, down a little from the sharp 20 per cent rise last year but still significant. Most of that rise was down to a sharp increase in lube oil costs," said Mr Greiner in a report in Maritime Global Net, of Warren, Rhode Island.a
