Singapore ratifies Maritime Labour Convention
Singapore will be the first Asian country to ratify the Maritime Labour Convention (MLC). The MLC sets out minimum working conditions for seafarers, including key provisions such as hours of work and rest, Seatrade Asia reported.
“This is a significant step for Singapore, as we commit to applying the convention’s provisions to Singapore-registered ships and ships that call at our ports, as well as to achieve decent working conditions for seafarers,” said Loh Khum Yean, permanent secretary of Singapore’s Ministry of Manpower.
Including Singapore 13 member states of the International Labour Organisation have signed up to the MLC and it is expected the required 30 ratifications for the convention to come into force will be achieved by year end.
