Norwegian shipper orders 2 more Daewoo vessels

Norwegian shipping group Leif Hoegh has agreed to buy two large auto carriers worth at least $120 million from South Korea's Daewoo Shipbuilding for delivery in 2009, privately owned Leif Hoegh said on Tuesday.

Leif Hoegh's spokesman Olav Sollie declined to give an exact value for the deal but said the vessels would cost more than the $60 million per ship it paid for similar vessels earlier.

"The earlier ships in this series began at under $50 million, and we paid more than $60 million for the last ones, (so) we must reckon on a little more now," Sollie told Reuters.

The new car carriers are in addition to nine new roll-on-roll-off vessels that the company's Hoegh Autoliners unit is set to take delivery of in 2007 and 2008, Leif Hoegh said. Seven of those are due for delivery in 2007 and two in 2008.

"Hoegh Autoliners has added 11 new vessels to its fleet the last three years, and the additional 11 vessels now under construction will boost the carrying capacity further," the company said.

"The background to why we are continuing the series is that we see growing demand for this type of tonnage, and the only way to get this tonnage is to build it," Sollie said.

The vessels have capacity to carry about 6,100 cars.

In total, Hoegh Autoliners deploys 55 vessels in its global trading system operated from 27 offices.
