Strong bunker sales lift Singapore trade index

An increase in Singapore's domestic wholesale of ship chandlers & bunkering lifted her third quarter (Q3) wholesale trade figures from year-ago levels, according to the republic's latest official data.Singapore's domestic Wholesale Trade Index (WTI) registered growth of 8.7% in Q3 2006 over the same period last year, but was down from 18.1% in Q2, data from the Department of Statistics (DOS) showed. Excluding petroleum, domestic wholesale trade went up by 12.1%.

Growth in the overall domestic wholesale trade came mainly from general wholesale trade and ship chandlers & bunkering, which reported increases in sales of 24.7% and 24.1% respectively.

On a quarterly basis, overall domestic wholesale trade rose 2.7% in Q3 from Q2 this year but excluding petroleum, growth was 7.2%.

''Most wholesale sectors reported improved domestic sales in Q3 2006, with ship chandlers & bunkering registering the largest increase of 25.1%,'' DOS said in a statement.

The republic's foreign WTI also registered growth of 7.6% in Q3 2006 compared to the corresponding period last year. Growth was however slower than the 17.4% posted in Q2 this year.

The overall growth in foreign wholesale trade was mainly contributed by the wholesaling of petroleum products. Excluding this, sales was up marginally by 1%.

Wholesalers of petroleum & petroleum products and ship chandlers & bunkering registered strong overseas sales increases of 15% and 9.8% respectively, largely attributable to higher oil prices, DOS said.

Quarter-over-quarter, overall foreign wholesale trade rose 2.3% in Q3, or 4.3% excluding petroleum.

''Almost all wholesale sectors experienced positive (quarterly) growth in Q3 2006, with the exception of general wholesale trade and ship chandlers & bunkering,'' DOS said. ''Their overseas sales dropped 7.5% and 1.3% respectively, compared with the previous quarter.''

The domestic WTI records sales transactions made locally and captures the sale of goods from wholesalers to other wholesalers, manufacturers and retailers whose business operations are in Singapore.

The foreign WTI pertains to wholesale sales outside Singapore and comprises wholesale exports of goods manufactured in Singapore, re-exports, offshore merchandise and transshipment cargo.

Data for the compilation of WTI are sourced from some 810 establishments engaging in wholesale trade activities covered in the quarterly survey of wholesale trade.
