In a statement here Wednesday, Westports executive director, Ruben Emir Gnanalingam, said the volume of container traffic has increased as more conventional cargo, such as steel products and grains, were now being shipped through containers.
He said local volume of cars has seen a tremendous increase especially in terms of transshipment.
"Today, Westports handles 150,000 cars compared with 12,712 for the whole of last year," he said.
Gnanalingam said productivity in the port averaged between 33 and 35 gross moves per hour per crane while more shipping lines achieved above 100 gross moves per hour on vessel productivity.
On expansion, Gnanalingam said the 600-metre Container Terminal 5 was completed in September and the port received six more twin-lift cranes this year.
"With 34 cranes in total, the ports capacity has increased to 6.5 million TEUs," he said.
He said Westports has not experienced any decline in the volume to date.
"In fact, a review of the local boxes shows that exports are growing at a faster rate than imports," he said.
