Kandla Port posts 23% growth

BL reported that Kandla port continues to maintain its tempo of growth. At a time when the major ports posted a traffic growth of a little over 7% and some of the ports even having failed to reach the targeted throughput, Kandla succeeded in achieving more than 23% growth and that too on a higher base.
The report added that the container throughput during the period was less than satisfactory. There was a drop in throughput, marginally though. The two container berths which have been leased out to a private firm need to have better rail connectivity, feel users.
It is noted that the port is planning to construct a broad gauge line from Gandhidham to Kandla to provide double line broad gauge connectivity to the port and the work will be executed by Western Railway.
According to informed sources, another area which perhaps deserves a little more attention is boosting the barge traffic. At Tuna, which is about 10 kilometer from Kandla port, there is a barge jetty but the volume of traffic handled by the jetty, it is felt could hope to increase only after dredging of the waterfront. The port authorities will soon finalize the dredging contractor.
