Iran's Bandar Abbas port up 15pc to 1.44 million TEU

Iran's Port of Bandar Abbas port increased container throughput 15 per cent to 1.44 million TEU year on year in the first nine months of 2008.
The growth, stated industry sources, was attributed to additional capacity and a strong local market, reported the UK's Transport Intelligence.
The Shahid Rajaee Container Terminal (SRCT) at Bandar Abbas is Iran's main container facility, located on the Gulf in the south of the country which hopes to handle two million TEU this year.
When Phase I of the second terminal (named SRCT2) at Bandar Abbas opened in February 2008, the port's annual container capacity increased from 1.7 million to 3.3 million TEU.
Phase II of the new facility will be operational in 2012 and will add 2,020 metres of quay dredged to 16 metres, and have 18 postpanamax quay cranes.
Tehran-based Tidewater Middle East PLC will continue to manage the facility. The company has appointed Singapore-based OPM (Overseas Port Management [S] Pte Ltd) as executive manager of SRCT2 for a period of five years from December 2007.
