Iran strikes offshore gas field in Caspian Sea
Iran has discovered a vast new gas field in waters of the Caspian Sea, Iranian minister of petroleum, Rostam Qasemi said Sunday.
The deposit is located at a depth of 700 meters and its reserves are estimated to be several times more than former estimations, the official said.
“The reservoir’s capacity is several times more than predictions,” Shana agency quoted Mr. Qasemi as saying.
Currently, Iran’s gas reserves in the Caspian Sea are estimated about 11 trillion cubic feet.
Mr. Qasemi said oil industry experts could reach the reservoir following more than 2400 meters drilling adding the reservoir is completely within the Iranian side of the sea locating in the edge of Iran’s maritime border.
According to Qasemi discovery of the gas reservoir in Caspian Sea, which is more complicated in comparison to those in the Persian Gulf and Oman Sea, was the result of several years’ efforts by the Iran’s oil industry’s experts.
The official noted that efforts to discover oil and gas reserves in the Caspian sea goes back to before the Islamic Revolution in 1979 adding currently 46 blocks have been identified mainly located in deep waters of which eight blocks are more important.
Iran is unable to attract foreign investment to develop its gas fields due to the economic sanction from the western countries. The sanctions are aimed at pressing Iran to withdraw from its controversial nuclear program.
