US makes $10 million available to small shipyards
The US Maritime Administration (MARAD) has made $9.98 million in federal funds available to improve the efficiency and competitiveness of smaller US shipyards, Ifw-net reports.
The grants are also available for ship construction, repair and reconfiguration, and maritime training programmes in communities economically dependent upon the maritime industry.
Eligible shipyards must be near a maritime community, must construct, repair, or reconfigure vessels 40ft in length or greater and may not have more than 1,200 production employees.
Kim Riddle, a spokesperson for MARAD, said: “This programme really works. It makes a significant impact on shipyard operations.”
Application packages must be received by 17 January. MARAD intends to award grants by 18 March 2012.
