Zhejiang coastal shipping fleet sets new record, surpasses 20 million dwt
At the end of October, the capacity of shipping fleet in eastern China's Zhejiang province reached 20.33 million deadweight tonnes, 10 million tonnes more than a year ago, which made it the largest of all provincial coastal fleets in China, Xinhua reports.
The province has an ocean shipping fleet of 3,609 vessels, with capacity of 16.92 million deadweight tonnes, which is the largest among all provinces in China. It also has 17,070 river ships with a capacity of 3.42 million deadweight tonnes.
Zheng Liming, deputy director of Zhejiang's provincial transport department, said capacity of ships of over 10,000 tonnes in Zhejiang totalled 12.29 million tonnes. Average ship capacity came in at 26,600 deadweight tonnes and averaged at 5.6 years old. Bulk carriers capacity has surpassed 10 million tonnes, taking up 25 per cent of China's bulk shipping market total.
Mr Zheng said waterway volume took up 37.1 per cent of provincial transport total and accounted for 76.95 per cent of the provincial cargo. Waterway accounted for more than 90 per cent of Zhejian's foreign trade cargo.
