More charges against Rena master and second officer
The master and second officer of the containership Rena that grounded in New Zealand on 5 October have been charged with “attempting to pervert the course of justice”, Seatrade Asia online reports. The officers from the Costamare-owned vessel have already been charged “discharge of harmful substances from ships or offshore installations” have had an additional seven charges brought against them by the New Zealand authorities.
Maritime New Zealand said the master faced four charges for attempting to pervert the course of justice and the second officer three charges. The authorities allege that they altered ship’s documents after the grounding took place. Each charge carries a maximum of seven years in prison.
