Russia battles fire on neclear sub, to investigate the case
A fire broke out on Thursday in dry dock of "82nd Shipyard" based in Roslyakovo of Murmansk region where the K-84 Yekaterinburg nuclear powered submarine was undergoing repairs. The incident occurred when wooden scaffolding and debris took fire, the Federal Investigating Committee said.
The fire has been put out, RIA Novosti reports quoting Emergencies Minister Sergei Shoigu.
The Investigating Committee has filed a criminal case and turned it over to its military investigative department on the Northern Fleet, which will conduct further probe. Investigators said most likely fire safety violations during routine maintenance works caused the incident.
Currently, investigators are questioning military personnel and civilians who witnessed the incident.
The Emergencies Ministry officials said that no one was seriously injured during the fire and that there was no threat of radiation leak or environmental pollution.
However, according to some local media reports nine people were taken to hospital in Severomorsk with inhalation injuries, including submarine crew members and workers from the naval yard, Barents Observer reported.
