Heavy ice stalls icebreaking operations in the Sea of Azov

Rosmorport’s diesel-electric icebreakers Kapitan Chudinov, Kapitan Chudinov and Kapitan Krutov had to cancel escort of a 36-ship convoy in the Sea of Azov due to compaction of ice and formation of pressure ridges, the Azov Ice Ops Headquarters reports.


The icebreakers will resume operations when the weather condition improves.


The icebreaker Kapitan Demidov was escorting to the port of Temryuk a convoy of 11 cargo ships to the port of Temryuk but the vessels failed to enter the port because of unfavorable weather condition.


As of 05:00 pm, March 19, there were 47 cargo ships in the Sea of Azov, 1 of them is damaged, 93 vessels, including 17 ice-classed ships, were ready to depart from the Azov Sea ports. In the Black Sea there were 62 merchant ships (9 - with ice-class hulls) to pass through the Kerch Strait.
