Northport gearing up to meet new box lifting challenge

One of Malaysia's key container ports, Northport, is to take delivery of three super post-panamax quay cranes at the end of the year, which will enable the facility to handle mega carriers much faster, according to a report in the New Straits Times. The three cranes, together with 14 straddle carriers and three additional empty stackers, will be deployed at Northport's Container Terminal 3 (CT3), which has been specifically built to handle the larger containerships.
The report points out that the three cranes will have twin-lift capabilities and will be able to hoist boxes higher from 37 to 42 metres, compared to the existing five gantry cranes at CT3. The new units will also have a maximum handling capacity of 50 tonnes instead of 40 tonnes, and be able to handle boxes 19 rows across the ship.
The assistant general manger of equipment maintenance at Northport, Azman Wahidudin, said the three new ship-to-shore cranes were currently being fabricated at IMPSA (Malaysia) manufacturing plant in Lumut, Perak.
The new equipment will further speed up the loading and discharging of boxes and will ensure shorter port stays for the mega-sized carriers, the report added.
