Indon 'levies' came up to IDR5.5trn last year: INSA

The Indonesian Shipowners’ Association (INSA) was reported as saying shipping companies in Indonesia paid IDR5.5trn ($588.5m) last year in allegedly illegal levies imposed by officials from various state security and law-enforcement agencies.

INSA chairperson Carmelita Hartoto was cited as saying that the officials came from the Indonesian Navy, the National Police’s Water and Air Police section (Polairud) and the Coordinating Agency for Sea Security (Bakorkamla).

The tactics used to elicit these these payments were always similar, Carmelita said: Officers would stop ships, pretending to check necessary documents and, eventually, allegedly demand payments to ensure security and safety.
