Ships pile up at Chittagong in dispute over crane operation

Eleven gearless feeder vessels have been waiting at the Chittagong docks as a strike continued over who should operate a gantry crane, reports Dhaka's Financial Express newspaper.Seventeen ships including nine gearless vessels were also waiting at the outer anchorage. Cargo was being transferred to and from eight feeder vessels until Friday afternoon while two gearless vessels remained idle at the Chittagong Container Terminal.
Port and customs officials told the newspaper that one stranded ship carries potato seed, which requires temperature control. Further delay in discharge will seriously hamper the country's potato cultivation this year, they said.Chittagong Port delivered 1,500 TEU Thursday after the withdrawal of the countrywide blockade enforced by a 14-party combine. The port expected to deliver 2,000 TEU Friday with 18,200 TEUs still held up in the port's container yards.
The director of the Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FBCCI), Amirul Hoque, said he would meet with the major trade bodies to take steps to resume the gantry crane operation.
