The top managers of the company do not seem to doubt that the mission will succeed. CEO Eivind Kolding of Maersk Line believes in a better 2007 than 2006.
»In 2007 it is necessary that the freight rates rise to reflect the dramatic increase of the costs involved in offering the transport ..... We shall continue to develop our services in our efforts to meet the customers’ needs, but se have to make sure that we get a fair compensation,« Maersk Line wrote in a press release yesterday.
The announcement is released in connection with the plans to change the route network in one of the most important markets – the Pacific. Here the shipping line now expects to increase the freight rate per container by between USD 300 and 500 from the Far East to the US.
The prices will be further increased when the transported goods are to be taken by train or lorry away from the American sea ports. The shipping company notes that there are also here »dramatically« higher transport costs.
The company will also try to increase the rate by USD 300 for transporting a container over the Atlantic between USA and Europe.
During a visit to New Zealand last week top executive and shipowner Eivind Kolding calmed the employees – as well as the attending journalists.
According to the local newspapers he explained that the shipping company expects better profit margins in 2007 than in the »difficult« 2006. The improvement is not, however, expected to reach the 2005 level.
