New terrain for port of Rotterdam

Port of Rotterdam Authority (PoRA) closes part of the Hartel canal at the Maasvlakte for inland shipping. The next step is to fill in this stretch of the canal in order to create 48 hectare of new terminal terrain. The water became redundant late 1997 when the authorities opened the Beerdam, port numbers 6440 / 6570, separating the Mississippi dock and the Hartel canal. The project is in accordance with the policy of PoRA to intensify the use of the present port and industrial area as much as possible. The site will be used for and by new port activities, such as possibly the handling of slabs. The port authority is in negotiation with potential terminal operators to use the site.
The amount of sand needed is some 2.5 million m3 and it is dredged in theYangtze dock in the northwest of the Maasvlakte. The filling in of the section of the Hartel canal is planned to be completed by the end of 2007. The waiting berths for lighters along the south shore of the Mississippi dock will be in use until compensating dolphins in the Hartel dock are available.
