New Zealand plans US$50 per hour bio security 'dirty' box tax
A New Zealand Ministry of Agriculture and Forests (MAF) official said that an extra NZ$100 (US$50) an hour inspection charge will levied against "dirty sea containers" because of the more rigorous inspection needed.
MAF Biosecurity has been carrying out inspections of incoming sea containers for three years to establish bio security contamination rates, with almost one in 10 boxes failing the inspection, reported Radio New Zealand.
Meighan Brown, a senior adviser for MAF bio security, said from this month importers can expect more rigorous checking of containers, as well as a more detailed paper trail. She said even though the containers are arriving from overseas, the $100 an hour cost of inspections will be recovered from the importer.
