Lebanese government to launch a tender for the US$120 million expansion of Beirut Port at the end of April

The Lebanese government will launch a tender at the end of April for the US$120 million expansion of Beirut Port, which is scheduled to be completed in 30 months from the time the contract is signed. ??
"We will open the tender to all companies in order to turn our port into one of the biggest ports in the region," said Public Works and Transport Minister Ghazi Aridi, speaking to the Daily Star newspaper, who expressed his hope that major international shipping companies would establish offices at Beirut Port. ??
On completion, the government hopes that the port will be able to handle 450,000 containers annually, as well as providing various other shipping services. The decision follows other expansion opportunities at the Tripoli and Batraoun terminals.
Around 140,000 square metres of land will be reclaimed from the sea to facilitate the expansion of Quay 16 by around 500 metres. The move is needed as the terminal has reached its annual throughput limit, the tender documents state. ??
Tender details are available on Beirut Port’s website.
