Ericsson 3 wins longest leg of Volvo boat race

Ericsson 3 has won the fifth leg of the Volvo Ocean Race. The boat skippered by Magnus Olsson of Sweden entered Rio de Janeiro on Thursday after 41 days at sea to win the longest leg in the history of the competition.
Race organizers say the closest competitor was Ericsson 4, which was still at least 50 miles away from the finish line.
Ericsson 3 won despite starting eight hours behind the rest of the boats after stopping for repairs before the leg began. The boat has spent 40 days, 5 hours, 37 minutes and 57 seconds on the leg that started in Yellow Sea port of Qingdao, China.
The race began from Alicante, Spain, on Oct. 11 and is scheduled to end on June 27 in St. Petersburg, Russia.
