Maersk replaces eight ships under US-flag
The A. P. Møller-Mærsk Group has sold eight containerships to the US affiliate Maersk Line Limited. All eight ships will be transferred to US-flag and replace eight older units also flying US-flag and that have been sold for recycling in China.
Five of the containerships are of the Hyundai-standard type, also know as the G-class, the units have until now been sailing under British and Danish flag. The ships are: Maersk Glasgow (it will be renamed to Maersk Kentucky), Greenwich Maersk (Maersk Wisconsin), Maersk Gloucester (Maersk Utah), Gosport Maersk (Maersk Idaho) and Dirch Mærsk (Maersk Wyoming). Maersk Line Limited has already four vessels of this class sailing under US-flag. Furthermore the former Sea-Land units Sea-Land Eagle and Sea-Land Mercury will be transferred back to US-flag. Finally the MSC Everest (ex Sea-Land Racer) will be transferred to US-flag upon redelivery for a timecharter to MSC. The vessels will operate on the Maersk Line network. However, all eight vessels will be a part of the US Maritime Administration’s transport programme and are paid an annual compensation to be standby in case of war or/and emergencies.
